PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Former Rhode Island Gov. Edward DiPrete, who served as the state's chief executive for six years and was later jailed for corruption, has died. He was 91. Robert Murray, DiPrete’s former chief of staff, co nfirmed that the Republican died Tuesday after celebrating his 91st birthday with family.

Former Gov. Edward DiPrete passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday night, on his 91st birthday, surrounded by five of his seven children, according to his son Thomas DiPrete.

(WJAR) — Funeral services have been announced for former Rhode Island Gov. Ed DiPrete. DiPrete died Tuesday on his 91st birthday. He served as governor of Rhode Island from 1985 to 1991. Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Nardolillo Funeral Home on Park Avenue in Cranston.
