Trump’s urgency to end the shutdown, which began on Sept. 30, comes after new polling shows that the majority of Americans blame Republicans and the Trump administration for the extended disruption. The two longest government shutdowns in U.S. history have been under Trump’s watch.
The law appears to have stalled in Congress, making many Americans question whether the $600 rebates will ever come to fruition.
In his first Truth Social post commenting on the election results, Trump suggested that the reasons why Democrats won is because he was not on the ballot and because of the government shutdown. Trump has repeatedly blamed Democrats for the shutdown despite Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress and the White House.
In reality, early exit polls showed that many people saw their vote as sending a message of opposition to Trump, CNN reported. The majority of voters in key contests also overwhelmingly disapproved of Trump’s handling of the presidency in those same surveys.
The push is the centerpiece of a Democratic effort to counter new Republican maps in Texas and elsewhere that were drawn to boost the GOP’s chances in next year’s fight to control Congress. For the new maps to count in 2026, however, voters will first have to approve a yes-or-no ballot question known as Proposition 50.
