The National Hurricane Center is monitoring two tropical waves with a chance for development while major Hurricane Gabrielle prompts advisories in the Azores.
Another disturbance in the Atlantic, Tropical Depression Nine, is expected to reach hurricane status by Tuesday morning.
Humberto is about 465 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands and is moving slowly toward the northwest. It is expected to strengthen substantially over the weekend to become a major hurricane, the Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
However, there are still more questions than answers about the storm’s long-range path, and if it could strike the United States. Even if it doesn’t make a direct hit, the system has the potential to bring a prolonged period of rain, storm suge and wind to areas along the coast, from Florida northward to the Carolinas.
The storm in the Atlantic is forecast to stay out to sea. Another disturbance that could affect the U.S. was upgraded to Tropical Depression Nine.
Hurricane Humberto has strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane, forecasters warning of dangerous surf and rip currents in parts of the northeastern Caribbean and Bermuda. Why It
Humberto strengthened to Category 5 hurricane status on Saturday afternoon, but storm forecasters do not expect it to make landfall in the United States.
