Two columns that held up the building’s pool deck began to fail several weeks before the 2021 collapse, according to a new federal report.

Ahead of the five-year anniversary of the Champlain Towers South collapse in Surfside that claimed the lives of 98 people, lead investigators with the National Institute of Standards and Technology said the collapse began in early June of 2021 when two connections between the garage columns and the pool deck slab failed.
