California voters gave Democrats — and possibly Gov. Gavin Newsom — a major win Tuesday by passing a plan that could help give them five House seats in 2026.
The race was quickly called in the measure's favor by election experts even as thousands of ballots remained to be counted across California.
California voters are deciding on Proposition 50, which would temporarily redraw the state's congressional district maps and could create up to five new Democratic seats in the House.
Democrats have entered the redistricting fight after voters in California passed Proposition 50, Gavin Newsom's response to Trump's Texas gerrymander.
Rep. Ken Calvert said he will run in the redrawn 40th District — which now bleeds into more than half of the representative's current 41st District.
Proposition 50, a ballot measure about redrawing the state’s congressional districts, was crafted by Democrats in response to Trump urging Texas and other GOP-majority states to modify their congressional maps to favor Republicans, a move that was designed to maintain Republican control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
