Democrat Abigail Spanberger's win Tuesday over Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears makes her the first woman to be elected governor of Virginia. Spanberger, 46, is a former U.S. representative and a former CIA intelligence officer.

The off-year elections feature major races in just a handful of states, but networks are deploying midterm-level coverage, seeing it not just as an indicator of the future of the Democratic party but a referendum on Donald Trump.

While Tuesday's elections don't involve the presidency or control of Congress, there are plenty of intriguing statewide and local races and ballot measures to watch.
