Democrats have swept the first major elections of Donald Trump's second term, with the US president saying the ongoing government shutdown is a "big factor".

In New Jersey, meanwhile, Democrat Mikie Sherrill beat Republican Jack Ciattarelli, with Sherrill keeping the governor’s chair in Democratic control and becoming the second woman to lead the state government.

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin feels confident about Tuesday’s gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, arguing Democrats have the momentum coming off of a series of overperformances in special elections this year.
