Democrats have swept the first major elections of Donald Trump's second term, with the US president saying the ongoing government shutdown is a "big factor".

Democrats enjoyed major wins beyond just the marquee races, up and down the ballot — and across the country — continuing the party's momentum heading into the 2026 midterm elections.

Democrat Mikie Sherrill is projected to win the New Jersey gubernatorial election against Republican Jack Ciattarelli. As of 9:30 p.m. with 63% of the expected vote reporting, Sherrill holds more than a 14-point lead -- 57.0% to 42.4%.

Hours before the first major elections since President Donald Trump’s win last November, Sen. Bernie Sanders offered a stern warning for Democrats about the party’s secret talks to end the shutdown.

Democrats had a good night, winning major races including governor's races in Virginia and New Jersey and a redistricting ballot measure in California, while also confronting the future of the party.

Morrisville Mayor TJ Cawley was the only Wake County mayor on the ballot to retain his seat, according to unofficial final results. He had faced two challengers, including Satish Garimella, a current board member.

As Democrats are riding the high of several notable electoral victories on Tuesday, the outlook for 2026 appears a bit tougher.
