South Florida organizations are gathering clothing, food and money to assist people affected by Hurricane Melissa in the Caribbean.

As Hurricane Melissa makes its way towards Jamaica, Caribbean Americans living in Tampa are expressing their concerns.

Intense rains that stalled over Central Florida unleashed nearly 20 inches (508 millimeters) of rain in 24 hours, triggering dangerous flash floods that stranded cars and inundated roadways, leaving some closed to traffic into Monday.

The amount of rain that fell over the weekend is not expected to be repeated; however, any additional rain over saturated Broward County could result in flooding.

The USS Nimitz is returning to its home port in Naval Base Kitsap in Washington state after having been deployed to the Middle East for most of the summer as part of the U.S. response to attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on commercial shipping. The carrier is on its final deployment before decommissioning.
