Authorities say that a mayor in Mexico’s western state of Michoacán was shot and killed in a public plaza on Saturday evening.

When those who defy organized crime are left unprotected, the state loses its legitimacy.

The killing of Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán, has sparked outrage among residents of the state, many of whom have voiced frustration with the security strategy of Gov. Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla's administration.

Carlos Manzo, municipal president of City of Uruapan in Mexico, was fatally shot during Festival of Candles on Saturday, November 1. The politician was known for his firm stance against the organized crime-related violence.
